The slowest part of a modern computer is the hard drive. Rather than a larger hard drive, have you considered a SSD for your main hard drive? Typical fast hd access times are around 8ms, typical ssd access times are around 0.2ms. They tend to lose out a little in bandwidth and write speed against the fastest drives and they will cost a good bit more. The link below should give you an idea of what's possible though.
Check this out http://www.dotcomworld.blogspot.com It is a popular blog … And has good stuff … I came across it on http://www.pirating.us … .It has cool stuff .. . . . i am sure you would find your answer there ……. Find your Answer in the Archive of Feb and March … u will surely find your answer ////
ram wont help u.it should support Ur motherboard and CPU(processor).if u don't play games that needs graphic card than u can use 512MB ddr2 ram,40 GB hdd sufficient, must have 845GL or 915/945 motherboard with P4 2 or better.if u have any 915or945 u should change Ur processor to dual core 2.0 or core2duo 2.0(better)that's enough.
Assuming you are running Xp a lean machine say even a P3 @1 -1.2ghz should run XP very well
You have at least 512 or ram?
Ok a lot of people say to use the msconfig to kill off startup stuff you don't need, you can only do a few things there
What you want to get to is the services, they load even though "most" people will never use them
CD burning service, don't need it if you have your own(nero, roxio)
Remote registry service, do you modify your registry or install stuff from a remote workstation?
Remote desktop share, um no thank you..
Error reporting service, calls home (Microsoft) I'll pass on that too
Wireless configuration, not needed if you use an Ethernet, or if your wifi card has it's own manager (this has nothing to do with a wireless router)
Dozens more, read the first line that tells you how to get to the services panel, then scroll down and check it out, when you double click on a service it opens the dialog box

See the "safe, power user and barebones columns" thats a lot of bloat..
He's got for Vista too just goto the main page
Believe it or not, the only major things that will keep your computer running fast is security and maintenance.
Security keeps viruses and threats out; and maintenance keeps your system flush.
Send me an IM on jackal_sbcc and I will get more specific if you like. But as far as web accelators and things like that.. waste of time.
add the maximun ram and the fastest ram available for your motherboard.
cleannn your computer from junk programs on the start up. thats the main reason why fast computer even with dual cores get slowww. my pentium 4 runs smoother that a core 2 duo from my friend becasue i always keep it clean from junk.
