So I am going off to college and my mom doesn’t want me taking my computer (desktop) with me so she’s telling me to out and buy myself a laptop. Since the laptop will be an expensive investment I want to make sure that I get the most out of every dollar I spend on it. The only problem is, is that I’m somewhat of an idiot when it comes to computers and laptops and I have no idea what some things are, their significance or what they do (ex. I have no idea what an "HDMI video out" is, the difference between memory and video memory, etc). So I am turning to Yahoo Answer users who hopefully know a thing or two more than me.
So here are the parameters to what I’m looking for:
-price: 0 (I’m willing to spend an extra [MAX] 0, but keep in mind you would have to rip the extra 0 out of my hands)
-screen size: I’m not too big on small screens and I really don’t care as long as its not small and blurry and whatnot
-performance: It has to run really well and smoothly, I have had bad experiences where everything that I touch just seems to run super slow and lags a lot
-battery life: I really want one that’s going to last for a while, I’m reading my consumer reports magazine and apparently some batteries have a battery life of like 2 hours and it just astounds me that people would invest so much money to have a thing thing that only works for 2 hours, so I’m going to put the bar at around at least 5 hours
–webcam: it would be nice if it had one
-weight: I don’t think I’ll care too much about weight, but then again I’ve never quite owned one so I really wouldn’t know where to set the bar, but for now I’m going to leave it pretty much open
-speakers: good decent ones, it doesn’t have to be super high quality (although, again, it’d be nice)
-usb ports: a few would be nice, but not too many I don’t think I’ll be needing a lot (max maybe about 4?)
-disc: kind of a maybe, I’m the sort that wants to be prepared
Okay so now for the sticky stuff where I’m not quite sure about what I’m talking about. So from what I know memory is aka RAM and that’s what you computer uses for its tasks (sort of? maybe? not really sure) and hard drive is where you actually save all your stuff (please correct me if I’m wrong).
So-
RAM: 3 or 4 GB (again, I’m a techno-idiot, so I’m not sure if that’s enough or too much)
Hard drive: 320 GB? (I kind of want a lot especially since I’m going to use this for 4 plus years)
I just want overall a really good, smooth running laptop that’s reliable and won’t confuse and piss me off when it starts acting up.
By the way I don’t know anything about processors I don’t know the difference between a 2GHz Core 2 Duo or a Pentium Dual Core T4200.
If it helps I will be using this laptop to do everything basically from playing games on Facebook, listening to music, doing projects, maybe making a few home videos here and there, to maybe even playing the Sims 3 (very unlikely, I don’t even have the game, but just to give you an idea). But yeah, emphasis on performance and battery life and its ability to put up with my occasional carelessness.
And this is going to sound really stupid, but…
I’m not sure what accessories automatically come with a laptop so if I have to buy the laptop a case and any other necessary accessories that might accumulate to a significant cost please factor that into your suggestions.
And I’m also hoping that the laptop comes with wi-fi capabilities (I’m not sure if I have to buy it a gadget or if it comes with it’s own internal one). Sorry I know this is sort of long.
Thank you.
ps. If one of you could point me to the direction of a website for computer/laptop/cell phone/technology dummies like myself it would be greatly appreciated, you’ll get a gold star in my book.
Also a note I want as specific as a model as possible. Not just the brand….
